Taking Inventory of Your Assets
Today we’re joined by Steve Bliss, a well-respected estate planning attorney here in Escondido. Steve, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today.
Steve: My pleasure. It’s important for people to understand the basics of estate planning and how it can benefit them and their families.
We often hear about wills and trusts, but where should someone even begin when creating an estate plan?
Steve: A crucial first step is taking inventory of your assets. This involves creating a comprehensive list of everything you own – real estate, investments, bank accounts, vehicles, personal belongings, and anything else of value. It’s essentially painting a picture of your financial landscape.
Why is this initial step so important?
Steve: Taking inventory allows you to understand the full scope of what needs to be addressed in your estate plan. Consequently, it helps determine how your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. Moreover, having a clear understanding of your assets can help you make informed decisions about beneficiaries, minimize potential tax liabilities, and prevent future complications.
I imagine this process can sometimes feel overwhelming for individuals. Can you offer any tips for making it more manageable?
Steve: Absolutely. Start by gathering all relevant financial documents – bank statements, investment account summaries, property deeds, insurance policies, etc. Break down the task into smaller chunks, focusing on one category of assets at a time. You can even use online tools or spreadsheets to help you organize the information.
Notwithstanding the importance of this step, have you encountered any challenges with clients when it comes to taking inventory?
Steve: Occasionally, I encounter clients who underestimate the significance of meticulous record-keeping. I remember one instance where a client had difficulty locating documentation for a valuable piece of artwork inherited from a relative. This resulted in delays and added stress during the estate settlement process.
That’s a great reminder that thoroughness is key. Any other advice you’d like to share?
Steve: Remember, estate planning is an ongoing process. Regularly review and update your asset inventory as your financial situation changes. This ensures your plan remains accurate and reflects your current wishes.
Seeking Expert Guidance
According to a 2021 survey by the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, nearly 60% of Americans do not have a will or living trust in place. Steve, what message would you like to convey to those who may be putting off estate planning?
Steve: It’s never too early – or too late – to start planning for the future. An estate plan provides peace of mind knowing your loved ones will be cared for and your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.
