Reporter: Janet Miller
Today we’re sitting down with Steve Bliss, a renowned estate planning attorney serving the Moreno Valley community. Steve, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today.
Steve Bliss: My pleasure, Janet. It’s important for me to educate people on the critical nature of estate planning.
Let’s dive right in. Many people are intimidated by the idea of estate planning. What advice would you give someone who feels overwhelmed by the process?
Steve Bliss: I understand that feeling completely. Estate planning can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. One crucial step is determining your goals and objectives. Consequently, this step lays the foundation for the entire process.
What exactly does “determining goals and objectives” entail?
Steve Bliss: It means carefully considering what you want to happen to your assets after you’re gone.
Do you have children or other dependents who need financial support? Are there any charitable organizations you wish to leave a legacy to? Moreover, do you have specific wishes for how your business should be handled? Defining these goals helps us structure an estate plan that truly reflects your values and desires.
It makes sense that clarity on these goals is essential.
Are there common pitfalls people encounter when trying to determine their goals?
Steve Bliss: Absolutely. One pitfall I often see is procrastination. People put off planning, assuming they have plenty of time.
Nevertheless, life is unpredictable, and it’s crucial to be prepared. Another issue is a lack of communication within families. Openly discussing your wishes with loved ones can prevent misunderstandings and potential conflicts down the road.
Accordingly, I always encourage my clients to involve their families in the planning process as appropriate.
Those are insightful points, Steve. Have you ever encountered situations where unclear goals led to complications?
Steve Bliss: Unfortunately, yes. I once worked with a client who had substantial assets but hadn’t clearly articulated his wishes for their distribution.
This resulted in protracted legal battles among his heirs, causing significant emotional distress and financial strain for everyone involved. It underscores the importance of having a well-defined plan in place.
More than 50% of Americans die without a will or trust, leading to intestate succession, which can be time-consuming and costly (Source: AARP).
That’s a powerful example.
Thank you for sharing that experience. I imagine helping families navigate these complexities is rewarding.
Steve Bliss: It truly is. Knowing that my work helps provide peace of mind and protect families during difficult times is deeply fulfilling. I strive to make the process as transparent and stress-free as possible.
